Somerset Opera was founded in 1974 by Brian Cresswell. We are a registered charity and based in Taunton. We mount our own productions performed by our own members and regularly welcome guests who, once they appear, often return. Our main opera production each year is invariably performed in full costume with orchestra. In addition we sing concert performances of operas and choral works and, as SOG on Tour, perform across the county in forms ranging from complete G&S productions to concert parties.
SomersetOpera has a policy of casting roles within the society if we can. But we run open auditions and welcome new members from Somerset and beyond, so please get in touch - we'd be delighted to hear you. For budding and seasoned professionals, we welcome your CVs but would only be able to pay more than basic expenses in exceptional circumstances. If you are looking to perform a particular role in a friendly environment, whilst striving for the highest possible standard, please do get in touch. We can generally arrange accommodation for those travelling from distance. When auditioning please bring a prepared piece to sing.
Somerset Opera is a registered charity (number 277240) and is a member of (Taunton Association for the Performing Arts) that is supported by Taunton Deane Borough Council, NODA and NFMS (Making Music).
Somerset Opera can provide casts and programmes from concert parties of 4 soloists to the entire cast of recent shows.
Recent concert parties have included “Operatic Pot-Pourri” and “Parlour Songs”. “Best of British” and various G & S compilations are perennial favourites. At least one couple of members had us at their wedding reception.
If you want it, we can find someone to sing it.
